Question : Participation of Women in PRIs

(a) the details of States which have implemented reservation of fifty percent seats in Panchayati Raj Institutions (PRIs) for women in the country;

(b) whether the Government has any data regarding the number of women Sarpanches/Members/Functionaries in PRIs and if so, the details thereof, State/UT-wise; and

(c) the details of the eligibility criteria prescribed for the candidates for contesting elections to PRIs in the country?

(a) As per the information available with the Ministry 16 States namely, Assam, Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Himachal Pradesh, Jharkhand, Kerala, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Odisha, Rajasthan, Sikkim, Tripura, Uttrakhand and West Bengal have made 50% reservation for women in Panchayati Raj Institutions (PRIs).

(b) There are 13.42 lakhs Elected Women Representatives (EWRs) in PRIs which constitute 46% of total Elected Representatives (ERs). The State-wise details are given in Annexure-I.

(c) As per Article 243 K of the Constitution, State Legislatures make provision with respect to matters relating to election to Panchayats. The eligibility criteria for contesting elections vary from State to State.
