There is no hazardous impact on account of operation of uranium mines in Jharkhand by Uranium Corporation of India Limited (UCIL) on the local people or the environment. The radiation levels in and around Jaduguda is almost same as in other parts of the district. The radiation levels in UCIL mines and mill are well within the limits prescribed in this behalf by the Atomic Energy Regulatory Board (AERB) which are in turn based on the recommendations of the International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP). The radiation levels in and around the mines and plants have been continuously monitored by the Health Physics Unit of the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC), which consists of qualified specialists in the relevant field. As per their report there is no radiation hazard caused due to the operations of UCIL. This has been confirmed by a team of medical experts, from BARC, Civil Surgeon, Singhbhum (East) district, and nuclear medicine specialists from Tata Main Hospital, Jamshedpur, Doctors from UCIL Hospital and also from a recent demographic and health survey conducted by Prof. V.K. Singh, Reader, Deptt. of Botany, Co-operative College, Jamshedpur and Dr. G.K. Iyer, ex-Medical Officer of BARC. Appropriate mechanism are already in place to ensure the safety of the people living in and around Jaduguda.
