Question : ENVIRONMENT GENE BANK



(a) whether the Government propose to establish a `Gene-Bank` to save the faune species which are at the verge of extinction due to environmental pollution and increasing population;

(b) if so, the details thereof and the time by which it would be established; and

(c) if not, the reasons therefor?

(a)to(c): The habitats of the endangered wild animals have been designated as Wildlife Sanctuaries and National Parks so as to conserve them in in-situ conditions. Legal protection is also provided to such species through specific provisions in the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972. The captive population of such species are preserved in Zoos in different parts of the country set up in accordance with the guidelines of Central Zoo Authority of India. Financial and technical support is provided for the management of such Zoos.
