Question : INTER-STATE WATER DISPUTE



(a) whether Inter-State water dispute between Karnataka and Tamil Nadu has not been solved so far;

(b) if so, the latest position of the dispute;

(c) whether the State Government of Tamil Nadu has been requesting the Union Government to intervene in the matter and resolve the dispute; and

(d) if so, the concrete steps taken by the Union Government in this regard?

(a) to (d) Under the provisions of Inter-State Water Disputes Act 1956, the Cauvery Water Disputes between the States of Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Kerala and Union Territory of Pondicherry has been referred to the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal on June 2,1990. The Tribunal has passed an interim order on June 25,1991 giving relief to Tamil Nadu and Union Territory of Pondichery. The Central Government has published the interim order under section 6 of the said Act in the official gazette on 10.12.91 making it final and binding on the parties to the disputes. In pursuance of order of the Supreme Court dated 9.4.1997. the Central Government has framed a scheme under section 6(A) of the said Act for giving effect to the interim order and all its related subsequent orders. The scheme consists of the Cauvery River Authority headed by Prime Minister with Chief Minister of the basin states as its members. The Authority is assisted by the Monitoring Committee headed by the Secretary (Water Resources).
