Question : Categorisation of Rivers

(a) whether the Government has devised any criteria for categorising rivers in major and minor category;
(b) if so, the details thereof;
(c) the details of major and minor rivers pertaining to each State, particularly in Karnataka; and
(d) the details of expenditure made to clean rivers in Karnataka during the last three years?

(a) to (c) There is no existing categorisation of rivers as major and minor rivers. However, it is informed that the country has been divided into 12 major river basins & 8 composite river basins for the purpose of assessment of water resources potential of India. Each basin has a main river and its tributaries. But, the main river in one basin can be smaller than a tributary of another basin. The name of the basins/rivers and some of its main tributaries are as below:-

Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) along with State Pollution Control Boards (SPCB) / Pollution Central Committees (PCC) monitors water quality of rivers. As per CPCB report of 2018, 17 rivers of Karnataka have been found polluted based on concerntration of Bio-chemical Oxygen Demand (BOD) which are as follows:
