Question : BASIC FACILITIES FOR PROMOTION OF SPORTS

(a) the schemes formulated by the Government to provide basic facilities for development of sports in the country ;

(b) the number and names of basic facilities already provided to the States out of the Central assistance provided and the amount of Central assistance likely to be provided to the States during the current year, State-wise ;

(c) whether the Union Government propose to provide financial assistance to the States for participating in the 6th National Games in the year 2000 ; and

(d) if so, the details thereof ?

(a) Central assistance, on matching basis subject to prescribed ceilings , for the approved sports projects is provided under the scheme of
(i) Grants for Creation of Sports Infrastructure and
(ii) Grant for Installation of Synthetic Playing Surfaces. Financial assistance of upto Rs.1.50 lakh, without any matching contribution, is also provided to Rural Schools for development of play field and purchase of sports equipment under the Scheme of Grants to Rural Schools.

(b) State -wise details of assistance provided during the last three years under the above schemes are placed at Annexure-I, II and III. No State-wise earmarking of outlay is made and the budget provision of Rs.18.50 crore for these schemes during 2000-2001 is expected to be released to the States/UTs for the approved projects .
