Question : EXCAVATIONS IN SIBSAGAR



(a) whether recently ASI has undertaken excavations at `Cheraideo` in Sibsagar district of Assam, the burial site of 32 Ahom Kings;

(b) if so, whether the Government propose to include `Cheraideo` in world heritage sites; and

(c) if so, the steps taken by the Government to develop this site as a tourist spot?

MINISTER FOR TOURISM AND CULTURE SHRI JAGMOHAN

(a) Yes, Sir. The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) has undertaken excavation of Maidam No.2 at Charaideo, district Sibsagar, Assam.

(b) There is no such proposal.

(c) The works of conservation and area development which have been completed by the ASI are: the enclosure wall of the Maidam No.2; boundary wall in front of the site and fencing on the other sides of the area; the pathway from the entrance to the monuments and facilities such as drinking water, toilet block and parking for vehicles.
