Question : Contamination in Drinking Water

(a) whether the Government has conducted any survey for heavy metals and other contamination in drinking water across the country;
(b) if so, the details thereof, State-wise;
(c) whether the Government adopted any policy to check regularly the quality of tap water being provided through Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM); and
(d) the details of the funds allocated to States including west Bengal under JJM?

(a) to (c) As per existing guidelines, States/ UTs have been advised to carry out water quality testing of drinking water sources on regular basis and report the same on Jal Jeevan Mission – Water Quality Management Information System (JJM – WQMIS). State–wise details of habitations with Arsenic, Fluoride, Iron, Nitrate, Salinity and Heavy Metal contaminations beyond permissible limits in drinking water sources, are given at Annex–I. States/ UTs can utilize up to 2% of their allocation under JJM for Water Quality Monitoring & Surveillance (WQM&S) activities.

(d) Details of State-wise Central allocation fund in 2021-22 under JJM, including for West Bengal, are at Annex–II.
