Question : LEASING OUT OF PORTS TO PRIVATE INDIVIDUALS



(a) whether the Government have decided to lease out some land in the various Ports in the country to private individuals;

(b) if so, the details there of; and

(c) the reasons therefor?

(a) to (c):. The Port land is leased out by Port Trusts as per the provision contained in Section 34 (1) of Major Port Trusts Act, 1963. However, Government have issued the guidelines from time to time on this subject. As per Government’s guidelines dated 15th February, 2000, the Port Trusts have been allowed to grant leases for lands for port related activities upto 30 years but any lease for a period exceeding 30 years should be granted by the Port Trust only after obtaining prior approval of the Government. Similarly, the port land can be given on lease for non-port related activities only after prior approval of Government. The renewal of the lease after expiry of 30 years can again be granted with the approval of the Government.
