(a) whether the Government have cautioned various sensitive institutions and departments against attacks on their websites maintained by such secret entities as the Bhaba Atomic Research Centre, Department of Electronic and Indian Army;

(b) if so, the details thereof; and

(c) the action taken by the Government and various sensitive institutions to protect them from hackers?

(a),(b) & (c): A Statement is laid on the Table of the Lok Sabha.

STATEMENT REFERRED TO IN REPLY TO LOK SABHA STARRED QUESTION NO.255 FOR 06.12.2000 REGARDING WEBSITES.

(a),(b) & (c): All Government Ministries and Departments including sensitive entities have been cautioned about the need to exercise precautions to avoid leakage of confidential information. Websites however do not contain sensitive information since they are meant to provide information in the public domain. Incidents of hacking of websites have come to light. These have attempted to deface/distort information. Hacking is now recognized as an offence under the Information Technology Act, 2000.
