Question : Establishment of New Steel Plants

(a) the details of all functional, profit making, sick public and private sector steel plants in the country at present, State/UT-wise;

(b) whether the Government proposes to revive the sick plants, if so, the details thereof and if not, the reasons therefor;

(c) whether the Government proposes to set up new steel plants including small and medium steel plants in various parts of the country, if so, the details thereof, State/UT-wise including Assam, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana; and

(d) the steps taken by the Government to make these plants operational in a time bound manner?

THE MINISTER OF STATE FOR STEEL (SHRI VISHNU DEO SAI)

(a) There are two steel manufacturing Central Public Sector Enterprises under Ministry of Steel namely Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) and Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Limited (RINL). Both of them are not sick CPSEs.
Steel is a deregulated sector. The role of the Government is that of a facilitator. As per data available, there are about 1189 operational steel plants producing crude steel in the country. Data regarding profit making/sick steel plants in the private sector is not maintained by Ministry of Steel. The State/UT-wise details of operational public and private sector steel plants in the country are at annexure.

(b) Does not arise.
(c) No, Madam. The Government is not considering setting up of new steel plants in the country.
(d) Does not arise.
