Question : Colleges-Universities for Women

(a) whether the Government has received any recommendations for setting up of
exclusive Universities for women in the country;
(b) if so, the total number of Women’s Colleges/ Universities that are functioning in
the country, State/UT-wise;
(c) whether the existing women colleges have adequate infrastructure and faculty
strength and if so, the details thereof;
(d) whether the Government is planning to open more Colleges/ Universities for
women including hostels in view of the shortage of these Colleges/ Universities in
the country and if so, the details thereof; and
(e) whether the Government has any proposal to construct buildings for women
under the Public Private Partnership (PPP) mode and if so, the details thereof?

(a) to (e): In order to encourage girl education, the Sub-Committee of Central
Advisory Board of Education (CABE) was constituted to look into the issues related
to “Girls Education”. The Committee has recommended establishing of an exclusive
university for women in each State.
As informed by University Grants Commission (UGC), there are 16
universities exclusively for women and 3950 colleges exclusively for girls in the
country. The State/UT-wise details of women colleges/universities are Annexure I.
The details regarding infrastructure in existing women colleges is at Annexure II.
Further, under the Centrally Sponsored scheme of Rashtriya Uchchatar
Shiksha Abhiyan (RUSA), central support is provided to increase access, equity and
quality of Higher Education. Till date, under the scheme, central assistance has been
approved for 342 women colleges and 7 women universities including for the
development of hostels in these institutions across various States and Union
Territories. The funds for these institutions have been approved under various
components such as creation of Model Degree Colleges (MDCs), new colleges
(professional & technical), upgradation of colleges to MDCs, upgradation of existing
autonomous colleges to Universities, equity initiatives, infrastructure grants to
colleges, infrastructure grants to universities etc.
