STATEMENT REFERRED TO IN REPLY TO LOK SABHA STARRED QUESTION NO.55 FOR 27.04.2016 REGARDING SWACHH BAHART MISSION
(a) The main objectives of the Swachh Bharat Mission (Urban) are to eliminate open defecation and to ensure scientific Municipal Solid Waste Management in the urban areas of the country.Government of India provides assistance to the cities in the form of incentive to individual towards construction of household toilets, 40% of the project cost for the construction of community toilets and 20% of the project cost for municipal solid waste management.
(b) & (c) The progress of the mission is reviewed from time to time. A statement indicating the targets set and achieved state-wise upto March 2016 is at Annexure-I. Additionally, Quality Council of India has undertaken the independent evaluation of large cities, in January 2016.
(d) & (e) Implementation of the Swachh Bharat (Urban) is a task that requires involvement of State Governments, Urban Local Bodies and citizens. Efforts are being made to ensure participation of self-help groups, school children, resident welfare associations, religious leaders, NGOs, corporate sector and important public icons from different walks of life in Swachh Bharat Mission.
Ministry has also undertaken several policy measures in collaboration with other ministries for promoting conversion of municipal solid waste to compost and energy.
