Question : RISE IN EMPLOYMENT



(a) whether the total employment in the economy has risen according to the latest employment survey;

(b) if so, the details thereof during the last three years and the current year, State/year-wise;

(c) whether the shift in employment from agricultural sector towards industry and service has also gained momentum;

(d) if so, the details thereof; and

(e) the details of other salient features of the said survey?

(a) Reliable estimates of employment and unemployment are obtained through quinquennial labour force surveys conducted by National Sample Survey Office, Ministry of Statistics and Programme implementation. Last such survey has been conducted during 2011-12 and the results released in June 2013. As per the results of the two most recent NSS surveys, estimated employment on usual status basis has increased by 8.62 million in the country from 465.48 million during 2009-10 to 474.10 million during 2011-2012.

(b) State-wise details of employment rate during the last three NSS surveys periods 2004-05, 2009-10 and 2011-12 are at Annex-I

(c) & (d) According to NSS survey results the estimated employment on usual status basis according to broad industry in the country during the period 2004-05, 2009-10 and 2011-12 are given below:
