Answer given by the minister

MINISTER OF STATE IN THE MINISTRY OF RAILWAYS (SHRI R. VELU)

(a) & (b): Yes, Sir. Introduction of new passenger services depends upon many factors like demand, quantum of traffic, commercial justification, availability of coaches and locomotives, operational feasibility, line capacity & terminal constraints, repercussions on essential freight traffic, development of infrastructure and availability of resources etc. During the current year the following services other than those announced in Budget 2006-07 have been provided till date:-

(Trains in single)
Introduction Extension - Increase in Frequency 14 16 2

However, Railways also make adequate arrangements to clear the extra rush of traffic during peak seasons like summers, winters, festivals, holidays, melas, vacations etc. which include running of special trains, augmentation of existing services and also increase in frequency which depends upon pattern of traffic, commercial justification, availability of resources etc. Being a continuous process as well as due to the factors stated above, the number of special trains run varies from year to year.

(c) & (d): Requests for introduction of new train services are received at various levels viz. division level, headquarter level and Railway Board level. These requests are received continuously throughout the year and action as feasible is taken. However, this voluminous data is not compiled.
