Question : STRIKE OF WORK IN STEEL PLANTS



(a) whether there was any strike leading to stoppage of work in some steel plants;

(b) if so, the quantum of production and financial loss occurred due to it;

(c) whether the Steel Authority of India Ltd. is going to finalise the long-term settlement in order to avoid any unwanted situation; and

(d) if so, the details thereof?

(a)&(b): Yes, Madam. The estimated production loss and financial loss due to strike on 30.10.2009 and 31.10.2009 in the Steel Authority of India Ltd. (SAIL) Steel plants/units is as under:

(c)&(d): The wage settlement in the SAIL is done through negotiations by a National level bipartite forum called National Joint Committee for the Steel Industry (NJCS). This Committee has representative of four Central Trade Unions viz., INTUC, CITU, AITUC and HMS. All the decisions are taken by consensus in this Committee. As regards, the current wage revision which is due from 01.01.2007, understanding between Management and workers’ representatives was arrived at. Based on this understanding, monthly wage has been revised for the workmen and perks / allowances are being finalized with NJCS.
