Question : IMPORT OF GARLIC

:

(a) whether the importers of garlic have demanded the Government to grant quotas for import of garlic;

(b) if so, the steps taken in this regard;

(c) whether the Government had issued quotas to some public sector agencies for import of garlic; and

(d) if so, the details thereof?

(a) & ( b ) : Under the current Exim Policy, import of fresh garlic is restricted. For grant of import licence for this item, applications are to be made in accordance with prescribed Policy & Procedure. The licences are granted in consultation with the Ministry of Agriculture.

( c ) & ( d ) : During 2002-2003, 15,000 MT of fresh garlic have been allocated to 4 Co-operatives Societies, namely (1) NAFED, ( 2) NCCF, (3) Karnataka State Co-operative Marketing Federation and ( 4 ) M.P.State Co-operative Marketing Federation.
