Answer given by the minister

MINISTER OF LABOUR AND EMPLOYMENT (SHRI K. CHANDRASEKHAR RAO)

(a) Estimates of employment & unemployment are obtained through quinquennial labour force surveys conducted by National Sample Survey Organisation. Last such survey was conducted during 1999-2000. As per this survey, unemployment rate among educated youth (persons in the age group 15-29 years with secondary education & above qualification) on usual status basis was around 14.8%.

(b to d) Since detailed estimates of employment & unemployment from National Sample Survey Organisation are available at 5 yearly interval, the data are accordingly maintained. In 1993-94 the unemployment rate of educated youth was 18.5% as against 14.8% in 1999-2000.

(e) Government is targeting creation of around one crore employment opportunities per year during the 10th Plan period. This will help the unemployed youth in the country.
