Question : Right-Sizing of Army

(a) whether the Government has prepared a blue-print for right-sizing the Army;

(b) if so, the details and the salient features thereof; and

(c) the fresh steps taken by the Government to transform the armed forces into lean, mean, rapidly deployable and integrated forces?

(a) to (c): A Committee of Experts was set up by the Government in 2016 to recommend measures to enhance the Combat Capability and Rebalance Defence Expenditure of Armed Forces. A total of 65 recommendations pertaining to Indian Army were approved for implementation. The recommendations of Committee of Experts entails rightsizing of certain units of Indian Army, thereby optimising the resources. It involves redeployment and restructuring of various posts like Officers/Junior Commissioned Officers/Other Ranks and Civilians, better utilization of supply and transport units, enhancement in standards of recruitment and improvement in the efficiency of National Cadet Corps.
