Question : DOCTORS REGISTERED WITH MCI



(a) the total number of doctors registered with the Medical Council of India at present;

(b) the total number of doctors registered during the current year;

(c) the shortage of doctors in proportion to the population of the country during the previous year;

(d) whether the Government is contemplating to increase the increase the number of medical colleges in the country; and

(e) if so, the details in this regard?

(a) to (e) As per information furnished by Medical Council of India 668019 doctors are registered with them. Out of these, 7218 doctors have been registered by Medical Council of India during this year. As per the Medical Council of India, the allopathic doctor-population ratio at present works out to 1:1722. In addition, there are more than 6 lakhs practitioners of Indian Systems of Medicine and Homoeopathy in the country. Taking all these numbers together, the doctor-population ratio comes to more than 128 doctors per lakh population (1: 781). There are 262 Medical Colleges with annual intake of around 29,500 students. As and when applications for opening of new medical colleges are received from concerned authorities, permission is granted to them subject to the fulfilment of conditions laid down in the Indian Medical Council Act, 1956 and the Regulations made thereunder for this purpose.
