Question : Tribal Representation in NGT

(a) whether there is no representative from the tribal community among the expert members of National Green Tribunal despite this community having expertise in conservation of forests:
(b) if so, the reasons therefor; and
(c) the steps taken by the Government to ensure participation/inclusion of tribal representative(s) in National Green Tribunal?

Statement referred to in reply to parts (a) to (c) of the LokSabha Starred Question No. 232 regarding ‘Tribal Representation in NGT’ by ShriMahabali Singh due for reply on 06.03.2020.


(a) and (b): There are presently four Expert Members in position in the National Green Tribunal. One of these namely - Dr.Satyawan Singh Garbyal, Expert Member belongs to Scheduled Tribes.

(c) The Expert Members of National Green Tribunal are selected as per the provisions of the National Green Tribunal Act, 2010 and the Rules framed thereunder. The posts of Expert Members are open to all eligible persons and based on their suitability. Accordingly, selections are made irrespective of the category.
