Answer given by the minister

THE MINISTER OF STATE IN THE
MINISTRY OF ROAD TRANSPORT AND HIGHWAYS

(SHRI PON. RADHAKRISHNAN)

(a) to (c) National Highways are designed as per latest Indian Roads Congress (IRC) Codes, specifications and Ministry’s guidelines. National Highways are designed for various speeds depending upon the terrain conditions and other site constraints as per the relevant IRC codes and practices. Speed limit boards are installed wherever the speeds are restricted due to the site conditions at particular locations based on survey investigations carried out in the highway development projects. However, limits of speeds for different categories of vehicles are notified vide SO 1997 (E) dated 05.08.2014 by Ministry of Road Transport & Highways under Motor Vehicles Act, 1988.
