Question : AVAILABILITY OF PULSES

(a) whether the condition of availability of pulses is not satisfactory and the research work is not being done as per targets for making the country self-sufficient in this field;

(b) the research carried on these items in the country, the number of the projects in progress and their location, agency-wise;

(c) the results of their evaluations; and

(d) the names of the newly developed varieties of wheat, maize and pulses?

Answer given by the minister

THE MINISTER OF STATE IN THE MINISTRY OF AGRICULTURE (SHRI HUKUMDEO NARAYAN YADAV)

(a) Yes Sir. At present the production of pulses is not commensurate with the requirement. The production of pulses has been fluctuating from year to year as pulses are generally grown under rainfed conditions on marginal and poor lands with little inputs. The highest production of pulses to the tune of 14.81 mt was attained during 1998-99. In the current year it is estimated to be 13.5 mt. As per target the research work is under progress for development of improved production technologies for increasing production of pulses for making the country self-sufficient. A number of improved varieties having multiple disease resistance and higher yield potential have been developed and recommended for cultivation. The effort is also on to develop cost effective hybrids in pigeonpea using the cytoplasmic male sterility system.

(b) The ICAR has established the Indian Institute of Pulses Research (IIPR) at Kanpur (UP) for carrying out research on pulses on various aspects of production. In addition State Agricultural Universities of the country in close collaboration with IIPR, Kanpur are also carrying out research on pulses to raise the production.

The ICAR has sanctioned four All India Coordinated Research Projects (AICRPs) on Pulses. Three of these i.e. AICRP Chickpea, AICRP Pigeonpea, AICRP Mullarp (Mungbean, Urdbean, Lentil, Lathyrus, Rajmash, Peas) are located at Indian Institute of Pulses Research, Kanpur and the fourth AICRP Arid Legume is located at Central Arid Zone Research Institute, Jodhpur. These All India Coordinated projects have the AICRP centres located in different States of the country. The AICRP centres have been given a mandate to develop location specific production technologies of pulses for different agro climatic conditions of the country.

(c) & (d): The production technologies developed by AICRP on different pulse crops are demonstrated on farmers` fields. The results of front line demonstrations have indicated that production of pulses can be increased by more than 20% if the improved package of production is adopted by the farmers.

The names of newly developed varieties of wheat, maize, pulses are given in Annexure-I.
