Question : TRAFFIC JAM ON NH-58



(a) whether there are reports of heavy traffic movement and bottlenecks on the Delhi-Haridwar National Highway No.58 causing traffic jams and encroachment; and

(b) if so, the details thereof and the steps taken by the Government to ensure smooth traffic movement on the said NH and remove encroachment?

(a) to (b) Yes, Sir. There is heavy traffic movement on Delhi-Haridwar section of NH-58. Delhi - Meerut section of NH-58 is already 4 laned. Four laning work in Meerut - Muzaffarnagar section is in progress. The physical progress achieved is 78% till March, 2010. The work is targeted for completion by August, 2010. Four laning work of Muzaffarnagar - Haridwar section of NH-58 has been awarded and the work is likely to be started by October, 2010. Traffic jams occurs in city portions of Ghaziabad, Muradnagar and Modinagar during peak hours due to local traffic. Smooth traffic flow is also hindered at some locations where construction is in progress. Steps for illegal encroachment with the help of District administration is taken from time to time.
