Question : CONSUMER PROTECTION AUTHORITY



(a) whether the Government proposes to create a Consumer Protection Authority to protect Indian consumers from unfair trade practices and ensure faster resolution of grievances;

(b) if so, the details thereof and the time by which it is likely to become functional;

(c) whether the proposed authority would be vested with investigative powers;

(d) if so, the details thereof and if not the reasons therefor; and

(e) the other steps taken by the Government to protect consumers against unfair trade practices?

(a) to (e): The Government is consulting various stakeholders regarding amendment to Consumer Protection Act, 1986. Creation of a Consumer Protection Authority is one of the proposals. No final view has been taken.
