(a): The Government has launched Swachh Survekshan-2022 on 27th September 2021. Other than being an annual cleanliness survey, it is a tool to nudge cities to build systems and processes for improved sanitation outcomes.
Some of the key features of Swachh Survekshan-2022 includes focus on monuments/ parks associated with freedom movement; greater weightage to the voice senior citizens and young adults; increased citizen participation by way of expanding field validation from the current 40% of wards to 100% of wards of all Urban Local Bodies (ULBs); safety, well being and dignity of Safaimitras; district ranking introduced for the first time, circularity in waste management; use of digitisation and technology for efficiency of data management and transparency.
(b): Under Swachh Survekshan-2022, the two new categories introduced for ranking and award are :
- 15,000 – 25,000 population category
- Less than 15,000 population category
(c): The criteria for selection of the cities and details of indicators/ parameters taken into consideration for selection of ULBs for ranking is as given in Annexure-I. Details of the indicators is provided in the Swachh Survekshan-2022 toolkit available at the following link :

(d) & (e): Under Swachh Survekshan-2022 interventions like digital documentation, geo-tagging of facilities and Quick Response (QR) Code based citizen feedback has been initiated by
way of end-to-end use of SBM-U MIS portal ‘Swachhatam’, use of apps like “Swachhata Apps” and different digital intervention.
(f): Steps taken to create awareness amongst all sections of the society for cleaner cities in Swachh Survekshan-2022, include,
(i). Citizen-led engagement to clean, maintain & sustain the monuments/parks associated with freedom movement,
(ii). District ranking introduced to engage district administration in supporting smaller cities.
(iii). Empowering Citizens to validate the cleanliness status of city through the Swachhata App.
(iv). Digital/QR code-based citizens’ feedback introduced to increase outreach with Covid-19 Protocol, etc.
