(a) whether there is a need to strike a balance between the increasing demand and supply of petroleum products in the country;

(b) if so, whether the Government have made any efforts to control the increasing demand of petroleum products during the last few years;

(d) whether the Government have assessed the consumption and demand of petroleum products in the private as well as Government sector in the country;

(e) if so, the details thereof; and

(a) to (f) OF LOK SABHA STARRED QUESTION NO.321 FOR 17.4.2000 REGARDING DEMAND & SUPPLY OF PETROLEUM PRODUCTS.

a) Yes, Sir.

b) & (c) The demand for petroleum products is governed by the growth in the economy. The consumption of petroleum products is an indicator of economic growth. Supply of petroleum products is growing in line with the demand to ensure adequate availability of products for all sectors. At the same time, Government is constantly taking action to conserve petroleum products and to reduce wasteful and inefficient consumption.


The recurring savings due to the conservation efforts are estimated to be as follows:

d) & (e) There is no separate assessment regarding consumption of petroleum products by the private sector and the Government sector.
