(a) & (b) As Public Health is a State subject, opening of Ayurvedic Hospitals for the treatment of cancer comes under the purview of respective State/UT Governments. There are no such proposals to open Ayurvedic hospitals for the treatment of cancer by the Central Government. However, under National AYUSH Mission (NAM) there is a provision of financial assistance to States/UTs for setting up of upto 50 Bedded Integrated AYUSH Hospitals including Ayurveda system where patients suffering from various ailments can avail treatment. The status of approved upto 50 bedded Integrated AYUSH Hospitals State/UT wise is furnished as Annexure. Further, All India Institute of Ayurveda (AIIA), Sarita Vihar has established an integrative Cancer Care Department.
(c): Public Health being a State subject, the details of such AYUSH Hospitals presently functional in the country, State/UT-wise, stream-wise, location-wise are not being maintained by the Government of India.
(d): As far as Central Council for Research in Ayurvedic Sciences (CCRAS) is concerned, the council has carried out the following Research & Development activities related to Ayurveda drug in cancer:-
(i) Council has undertaken drug development of AYUSH QOL-2C for improving the quality of life in cancer patients. The clinical studies were conducted at St. John’s Medical College, Bengaluru and AIIMS, New Delhi in breast cancer patients and at Bhagwan Mahaveer Cancer Hospital and Research Centre, Jaipur in lung cancer patients. The technical report of the study conducted at AIIMS has been published.
(ii) CCRAS has undertaken research on coded drug Carctol-S under drug development. The clinical study on ovarian cancer in collaboration with Tata Memorial Hospital and ACTREC.
(iii) CCRAS has conducted in-vitro experimental study for screening of some medicinal plants for anticancer activity. The details published in book entitled “Report on screening of single herbal drug extracts for potential anti-cancer activity”.
(iv)An intra-mural research study to evaluate and explore the mechanism of action of anticancer Ayurvedic plants using cell based assays has been initiated at Regional Ayurveda Institute for Fundamental Research, Pune.
The council is also carrying out screening for cancer in the program for Integration of AYUSH (Ayurveda) with National Programme for Prevention & Control of Cancer, Diabetes Cardiovascular Diseases & Stroke (NPCDCS)” programme and Stroke (NPCDCS).
