Question : COOPERATIVE BANKS IN KARNATAKA



(a) the name of the co-operative banks in Karnataka which have been conferred scheduled bank status so far;

(b) the criteria for according scheduled bank status to cooperative banks;

(c) the number of applications/proposals pending with the Government for according scheduled bahk status in Karnataka; and

(d) the time by which these are likely to be cleared?

THE MINISTER OF STATE IN THE MINISTRY OF FINANCE (SHRI BALASAHEB VIKHE PATIL):

(a) Reserve Bank of India (RBI) and National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) have reported that Kamataka State Bank Ltd. and Amanath Cooperative Bank Ltd. , Bangalore are the cooperative banks in Kamataka which have been conferred the Scheduled status so far.

(b) As reported by RBI, a cooperative bank would et scheduled status when it gets included in the second schedule to the Reserve Bank of India Act, 1934. For inclusion in the schedule, the bank should comply with section 42 (6) (a) of the RBI Act vide which it should have a paid-up share capital and reserves of an aggregate alue of not less than Rupees 5 lakhs and its affairs should not be conducted in a manner detrimental to the interest of depositors.

(c) and (d) RBI has reported that there are six roposals pending for according scheduled bank status to cooperative banks from Karnataka. These proposals .`11 be considered after carrying out statutory inspections ler March 31, 2002.
