Question : Closure of VOC Port at Thoothukudi

(a) whether it is a fact that VOC port, Thoothukudi, has been closed down since last few years;
(b) if so, the details thereof and the reasons therefor along with the logical importance of the port; and
(c) the details of workers affected due to closure of VOC port and the efforts being taken to re-open the port?

Answer given by the minister

(a) No, Sir.
(b) Does not arise. VOC Port is strategically located close to the east west international sea route. The Port has a maximum draft of 14.20 meters and it can handle bulk vessels of capacity upto 95,000 DWT. Port is well connected with 6 lane road connecting NH 45 B and NH 138. It mainly serves a primary hinterland of South Tamil Nadu, secondary hinterland to Coimbatore, Tirupur region and distant hinterland to North Tamil Nadu.
(c) Does not arise.
