UNIFORM DEVELOPMENT OF CULTURAL CITIES

Will the Minister of CULTURE be pleased to state:
(a) whether the Government proposes to declare ancient cities of the country as heritage cities and if so, the details thereof;
(b) whether the Government has any scheme to develop heritage cities and if so, the details thereof and the number of such cities identified, State/UT-wise;
(c) the funds allocated and expenditure incurred in this regard during the last three years and the current year;
(d) whether the Government proposes to connect such cities and to provide them with modern facilities; and
(e) if so, the details thereof and the time by which these cities are likely to be modernized?

(a)to(c) Under the Ministry of Urban Development, the National Heritage City Development and Augmentation Yojana (HRIDAY) Scheme is aimed at preserving and revitalizing the soul of and unique character of the heritage cities in India. The first phase of the HRIDAY Scheme was launched in January, 2015 for a period of 27 months with a total outlay of Rs.500 Crores, fully funded by the Central Government. The State/UT wise details are at Annexure.
In the first phase, following twelve cities have been identified for development under the scheme.
Ajmer, Amritsar, Amaravati, Badami, Dwarka, Gaya, Kanchipuram, Mathura, Puri, Varanasi, Velankanni, Warangal.
(d)&(e) No such proposal is under consideration.
