Question : National Language Translation Mission (NTLM)

(a) whether the Government has proposed to launch National Language Translation Mission (NTLM) in the Country;
(b) if so, the details thereof;
(c) whether the NTLM will make available knowledge of governance-and-policy related in major Indian languages on the Internet;
(d) if so, the details thereof; and
(e) whether the Government has organised online competition for design of Logo and Tagline contest and if so, the details thereof?
(f) the other important steps being taken by the Government in this regard?

(a) to (b): Yes Sir. Under Budget announcement 2021, this task has been assigned to Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology. The reply is based on the inputs received from the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology. The National Language Translation Mission (NLTM) aims to enable the wealth of governance and policy related knowledge on the Internet to be

made available in major Indian languages. Thus removing the language barrier using technology leading to digital inclusion and digital empowerment of the citizens.

(c) & (d): Yes Sir. The domain of governance and policy is covered under NLTM. The information available in public domain on governance and policy will be used to build the datasets and to train the Artificial Intelligence based machine translation system.

(e) : Yes Sir. In order to make NLTM a mass movement and with the objective to ensure participation of citizens and other stakeholders like industry, academia, start-ups, a challenge round was conducted for community suggestions on name, logo, and tagline of the Mission. A total of about 800 entries have been received.

(f): The NLTM create and nurture an ecosystem involving start-ups, academia and industry working together to develop and deploy innovative products and services in Indian Languages. National open data sets are created from govt projects so far and asking all major newspapers and TV networks to contribute their data sets. Crowd sourcing with large scale school and college student involvement is encouraged. Challenge rounds are organised for Start-ups and they are also involved in building datasets.
