Question : Residential Model Schools in U.P.

(a) whether it is a fact that the Government approval is awaited for construction of residential
complexes in model schools being run in Uttar Pradesh and if so, the details thereof; and
(b) whether it is also a fact that the shortage of residential model schools is being felt in
Scheduled Caste dominated districts of Uttar Pradesh and if so, the steps taken/proposed to be
taken by the Government in this regard?

Answer given by the minister

MINISTER OF STATE IN THE MINISTRY OF HUMAN RESOURCE DEVELOPMENT
(SHRI UPENDRA KUSHWAHA)
(a) & (b) : The Centrally Sponsored Scheme of Model Schools envisaged inter alia setting
up of 3500 model schools, i.e. one in every Educationally Backward Block (EBB) through the
States/UTs. There is no provision for construction of residential complexes in model schools
under this scheme. 274 model schools have been approved for the EBBs of Uttar Pradesh till
2014-15. However, the scheme has been delinked from the support of Government of India with
effect from 2015-16 and stands transferred to States/UTs in the light of higher devolution of
funds to the States as recommended by the 14th Finance Commission. Thus, setting-up of Model
Schools and providing residential facilities in such schools is within the domain of the State
Government.
