Question : Subsidies to Fisheries Sector

Will the Minister of FISHERIES, ANIMAL HUSBANDRY AND DAIRYING ??????????, ??????? ?? ????? ?????? be pleased to state:

a) whether the Government has entered into any agreements at World Trade Organization regarding subsidies to the fisheries sector in the country and if so, the details thereof;
b) whether the Government plans to bring down the subsidy for fisheries in the country and if so, the details thereof;
c) whether the Government has data regarding the fishing subsidies offered by other countries to its fishermen and if so, the details thereof;
d) whether the Government has observed large scale industrial fishing taking place in the country and if so, the details thereof; and
e) whether any large private companies or corporations engage in large scale fishing activities in the country and if so, the details thereof?

Statement referred to in reply to the Lok Sabha Starred Question No.32 put in by Shri Hibi Eden and Shri M.K. Raghavan, Members of Parliament for answer on 19-07-2022 regarding “SUBSIDIES TO FISHERIES SECTOR”
(a) The ‘Agreement on Fisheries Subsidies’ has been unanimously adopted on 17th June, 2022 by the Members during the Twelfth Session of the Ministerial Conference (MC-12) of the World Trade Organizations (WTO) held at Geneva.
(b) Government has no plan to bring down the fisheries subsidies in the country.
(c) The information regarding subsidies including fisheries subsidies given by member countries are furnished by respective member countries to the WTO as per Article 25 of Agreement on Subsidies and Countervailing Measures (SCM Agreement) of WTO. The data regarding fisheries subsidies as available in WTO website and other sources is compiled from time to time by the Centre for WTO Studies (Centre for Research in International Trade), the Indian Institute of Foreign Trade (IIFT) under the Ministry of Commerce & Industry. The information regarding Governmental support given to fisheries sector by some major countries is placed at Annexure.
(d) The marine capture fisheries in the country is mostly small-scale in nature. As such there is no large-scale industrial fishing happening in the country.
(e) No large private companies or corporations engage in large-scale fishing activities in the country.
