Question : RAILWAYS NETWORKS IN BORDER AREAS

(a) whether the Government proposes to develop railways networks along border areas;

(b) if so, the details thereof;

(c) whether Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the above projects has been prepared;

(d) if so, the details thereof, project-wise;

(e) the funds allocated for accelerating develo- pment of railways networks in border areas during the last three years; and

(f) the extent to which Indian defence system is likely to be strengthened after development of railways networks in border areas?

MINISTER OF DEFENCE (SHRI MANOHAR PARRIKAR)

(a) to (e): Government has identified four strategic railway projects for development in the border areas. Proposal has been received from Ministry of Railways for release of funds for carrying out Final Location Survey of these projects. An allocation of Rs.1000/- crore was made for these projects in 2014-15. A sum of Rs.500/- crore has been allocated during 2015-16 for this purpose.

(f) These railway lines will support the movement and sustenance of Armed Forces during war and peace. These lines would also lead to speedy mobilization, direct connectivity and also enhance strategic reach of the Defence Forces, thereby contributing towards the secu- rity and safety of the nation.
