Question : FOREIGN COLLABORATION IN SHIP BUILDING SECTOR



(a) whether the Union Government has formulated any policy for foreign collaboration, either as direct investment or Government to Government venture in the Ship Building Sector ;

(b) if so, the details thereof;

(c) whether the new ‘Comprehensive Marine Policy’ is ready for consideration;

(d) if so, the details thereof; and

(e) if not, the reasons thereof ?

(a) & (b) 100% Foreign direct investment is allowed in the shipbuilding sector. Therefore, interested companies, both foreign and Indian, can set up shipyards either on their own or with a joint venture partner.

(c) to (e) A comprehensive policy for the Maritime Sector which includes Ship Building Sector, Ports, Merchant Shipping and Inland Water Transport is under finalization. The policy seeks to combine vision and strategy for the sector through harmonious and coordinated development of our maritime assets like ports, shipping, inland water transport systems and ship building and ship repair industries. After factoring in the comments of the Appraising agencies, approval of the competent authority would be taken.
