Question : Nuclear Reactors in Pakistan

Will the Minister of EXTERNAL AFFAIRS be pleased to state:

(a) whether the Government is aware that China is constantly providing help to Pakistan for developing nuclear reactors and if so, the details thereof;

(b) whether Pakistan is eyeing the latest power technology developed by China and if so, the details thereof;

(c) whether the above mentioned developments may pose threat to our country;

(d) if so, the details thereof; and

(e) the steps taken by the Government in this regard?

(a) & (b) Yes. Government is aware of the agreement to supply two additional nuclear power reactors, Chashma-3 and Chashma-4, by China to Pakistan. These reactors are reportedly under construction, in addition to Chashma-1 and 2, which are already in operation. Government is further aware of reports of an agreement for supply of additional reactors of Chinese origin to be built at Chashma, Karachi and a third site in Pakistan. Government is also aware of the Chinese assistance to Pakistan in developing the Khushab nuclear reactor that is capable of producing plutonium for use in Pakistan’s nuclear weapons.

(c) to (e) Government keeps a constant watch on all developments having a bearing on India’s national interest and takes all necessary measures to safeguard it.
