(a) the details of targets fixed by the Government to
provide telephone facilities in Gram Panchayats in the NER
during each of the last three years, district-wise; and
(b) the necessary steps being taken by the Government to
achieve the target for providing telephones to Gram
Panchayats in the NER States?

(a) The details of targets fixed to provide telephone
facilities in Gram Panchayats in the North Eastern Region
(NER) during the last three years i.e. 2002-03, 2003-04 and
2004-05 is given in the Annexure.
(b) Following steps are being taken to achieve target for
providing telephones to remaining accessible, undisturbed,
undisputed and inhabited villages with population more than
100 including Gram Panchayats:-
(i) Mobile Switching Centre (MSC) based Wireless in
Local Loop (WLL) equipment is being deployed.
(ii) Remote and isolated villages including Gram
Panchayats which can not be covered by any
terrestrial technologies are planned to be
provided with telephones by deployment of Digital
Satellite Phone Terminals (DSPTs).
