Question : AGREEMENT WITH INDIAN OCEAN TUNA COMMISSION



(a) whether the Government has signed a 25 years agreement with the Indian Ocean Tuna Commission to comply with all its requirements;

(b) If so, the details thereof;

(c) the extent to which the IOTC has been making suggestions and insisting on compliance in fishery policy of the country; and

(d) the steps taken by the Government to protect the interest of the Indian fishermen in this regard?

(a) to (d) Indian Ocean Tuna Commission (IOTC) is an Inter-Governmental Organization established under the constitution of Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations. The mandate of the IOTC is the management and conservation of Tuna and Tuna like species in the Indian Ocean region.

All contracting parties to the agreement for establishment of IOTC, including India are expected to comply with the management and conservation measures adopted by it, India regularly participates in the various sessions and meetings of the IOTC to ensure that the interests of the country are strongly advocated and protected.
