Question : Schemes for Pollution Free Water

(a) the details of the schemes being implemented by the Government to keep the water pollution free in urban and rural areas;
(b) whether outcome of the schemes being implemented by the Government to ensure availability of clean potable water in urban and rural areas is positive as per the report submitted by the Government agency;
(c) if not, whether the Government proposes to implement some new schemes/programmes in this regard;
(d) whether the Government is planning to manufacture water testing device to ensure availability of potable water to each village/household; and
(e) if so, the details thereof?

(a) to (c) To provide potable tap water supply to every rural household by 2024, Government of India is implementing Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) – Har Ghar Jal in partnership with States. The estimated outlay of the mission is Rs. 3.60 lakh Crore. At the time of launch of mission on 15th August, 2019, only 3.23 Crore households had tap water connections. Since then, 3.85 Crore rural households have been given tap water connections. Thus, out of total 19.19 Crore rural households in the country, more than 7.08 Crore households are having potable tap water supply.
As reported by the Ministry of Housing & Urban Affairs (MoHUA), under AMRUT scheme, sewage treatment plants (STPs) with total capacity of 6,160 MLD (million litre per day) are being set up, out of which 1,072 MLD capacity has become operational. In the 500 AMRUT cities, 101 lakh households have been provided tap water connections and 67 lakh sewer connections in convergence with other schemes. A new scheme has also been proposed with an objective to provide sustainable cost-effective drinking water supply to citizens in all 4,372 statutory towns and universal coverage of sewage and septage management in 500 AMRUT cities.
(d) & (e) To ensure potable drinking water by testing the quality of tap water in villages and at household level, an innovation challenge has been launched to develop ‘portable water quality testing devices. ’This will help in testing the quality of tap water supplied easily and instantaneously.
