Question : LEGAL AID CENTRES



(a) whether the Government is monitoring and evaluating the functions and activities of the free legal aid authorities and the free legal aid centres functioning under them;

(b) if so, the details thereof;

(c) whether the Authorities and Centres have come for providing legal aid and protection to the poor under-trial prisoners; and

(d) if so, the detail thereof?

(a) & (b): The monitoring and evaluation of functions of legal aid programmes is done by the National Legal Services Authority (NALSA) under section 4
(i) sc mt of the Legal Services Authorities Act, 1987.

(c) & (d) : Yes, Sir. Lega! Aid lawyers on panel of State Authorities visit prisons regularly to render legal advice etc to eligible/undertrial prisoners under section 12 of the above Act.
