Question : Participation of Women in Sports

(a) whether the Government is aware that the women from the country particularly from the North Eastern (NE) States have won laurels for the country in the field of sports;
(b) if so, the details of the schemes being implemented by the Government for encouraging and giving training to the women players from various States particularly the NE States in the field of various sports;
(c) whether the Government has formulated any action plan for identifying and nurturing the sporting talents from rural areas of various States particularly NE States; and
(d) if so, the details thereof?

(a): Yes, Madam. Women sportspersons from North Eastern States have made the country proud by winning a number of medals in international sports events including mega
Sports events such as Olympic Games, Asian Games and Commonwealth Games.
(b) to (d) : All schemes of the Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports and the Sports Authority of India (SAI) are equally applicable to women sportspersons from various states including in North Eastern (NE) States. Details of the schemes being implemented by the Government for encouraging and giving training to the sportspersons is given in the Annexure.
Under the sports promotional schemes of SAI, the talented sports persons including young women athletes from all over India including North East region are identified based on the scheme selection criteria by organizing talent scouting programme by the respective Regional Centres. The Regional centers of SAI in NE region are at Guwahati and Imphal.
The majority of the trainees selected from North Eastern Region belong to the rural and backward areas of the North Eastern States. The selected trainees are provided with the facilities in the form of expert coaches, sports equipment, boarding and lodging, sports kit, competition exposure, educational expenses, medical/ insurance and stipend as per the approved scheme norms.
Department of Sports has given financial assistance from National Sports Development Fund (NSDF) to Mary Kom Regional Boxing Foundation for Boxing academy at Manipur. SAI has signed an agreement with the said academy to promote boxing in the region.
