Answer given by the minister

MINISTER OF STATE IN THE MINISTRY OF RAILWAYS AND PARLIAMENTARY AFFAIRS (SHRI O. RAJAGOPAL)

(a) The trains whose average speed on the entire run in both directions is 55 kilometers or more per hour on Broad Gauge and 45 Kilometers or more per hour on Meter Gauge are designated as Superfast and a nominal supplementary charge is levied on passengers travelling by such trains. The amount of supplementary charge is prescribed in accordance with the class of travel.

(b) The information is being collected and will be laid on the Table of the Sabha.

(c) and (d): Yes, sir. Average speed on the entire run of the train in both directions is the criteria for declaring the train as superfast and as per the criteria, Vidarbha Express qualifies as a superfast train.

(e) to (g): Passengers, including season ticket holders travelling in second class coaches of superfast trains are required to pay Rs. 10/- per journey towards superfast surcharge. Due to financial constraints on Railways, it is not proposed to make any change in this policy.
