Question : MINIMUM WAGES



(a) the number of employments for which the minimum wage has been fixed under the Minimum Wages Act, 1948 by both Union and the State Governments;

(b) the details of minimum wages fixed in Tamil Nadu;

(c) whether it is a fact that the minimum wages are fixed either by Committee Method or by Direct Notification Method and not under the Minimum Wages Act;

(d) if so, the reasons therefor;

(e) whether the Government are contemplating to amend the Act to fix minimum wages under the Minimum Wages Act; and

(f) if so, the details thereof?

MINISTER OF STATE FOR LABOUR AND EMPLOYMENT (SHRI MUNI LALL)

(a) : The Union Government has fixed minimum wages in respect of 44 scheduled employments in the Central sphere. In so far as State sphere is concerned, the number of such employments is 1222.

(b) : In the State of Tamil Nadu, there are 60 scheduled employments for which the minimum wages have been fixed. A Statement showing the names of the scheduled employments and the minimum wages is annexed.

(c) & (d) : The minimum Wages Act provides for fixation of minimum wages both through Committee Method and Notification Method.

(e) & (f) : The Government has been in the process of bringing Amendments in the Minimum Wages Act. However, given the procedure/steps involved, it may not be possible to indicate any time frame.
