Question : 14TH NAM CONFERENCE 93



(a) whether India participated in the 14th NAM Conference held in September this year in Cuba;

(b) if so, the details of issues discussed;

(c) whether the PM had discussed with the Pakistan President the need to evolve a joint anti-terrorism mechanism during the said summit;

(d) if so, the details thereof;

(e) the reaction of the member countries regarding the issue of cross-border terrorism; and

(f) the outcome of the Summit?

THE MINISTER OF EXTERNAL AFFAIRS (SHRI PRANAB MUKHERJEE)

(a) & (b) Yes. The Prime Minister led India’s delegation to the 14th NAM Summit Conference held in Havana (Cuba) on 15-16 September, 2006. The theme of the Summit Conference was “The Purposes and Principles and the Role of Non-Aligned Movement in the Present International Juncture”. Besides holding discussions on the theme of the Summit Conference, NAM member countries also collectively discussed a wide range of global, regional and sub-regional, and development, social and human rights issues of common interest.

(c) to (e) PM had a bilateral meeting with the President of Pakistan on the sidelines of the Summit, during which the issue of terrorism was discussed. It was agreed to set up an India-Pakistan anti-terrorism institutional mechanism to identify and implement counter- terrorism initiatives and investigations.

(f) The following documents were adopted by consensus at the 14th NAM Summit:

i) Final Document;

ii) Plan of Action for the Non-Aligned Movement (2006-2009);

iii) Declaration on the Purposes and Principles and the role of the Non-Aligned Movement in the Present International Juncture;

iv) Document on the Methodology of the Non-Aligned Movement;

v) Statement on the Islamic Republic of Iran’s Nuclear issue; and

vi) Declaration on Palestine.
