Question : Accommodation to Tribal People

(a) whether as per 2011 census Tamil Nadu is having 7.21 lakhs of tribal population which is around 1.10 per cent of total population and most of the tribal communities are living inside the reserved forests;

(b) whether the Government is considering any proposal to provide housing accommodation to tribal people of Tamil Nadu;

(c) if so, the details thereof along with the particulars relating to Pollachi constituency;

(d) whether the Government proposes to create separate fund for tribal housing; and

(e) if so, the details thereof?

Answer given by the minister

(a): As per 2011 Census, Tamil Nadu is having 7.95 lakhs Scheduled Tribe population which is 1.1% of State’s population. As intimated by the Government of Tamil Nadu most of the tribal communities are living in and around the forest areas.
(b)& (c):In pursuance of the Government’s vision of “Housing for All”by 2022, the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs isimplementing Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (Urban) [PMAY(U)] since25.06.2015 for providing assistance to States/Union Territories (UTs) inaddressing the housing requirement of the people belonging toEconomically Weaker Section (EWS), Lower Income Group (LIG) andMiddle Income Group (MIG) categories in urban areas. Similarly, Ministry of Rural Development is implementing Pradhan Mantri Awaas Yojana – Gramin (PMAY-G). All rural households who arehouseless and living in zero, one and two room kutchahouse as per Socio-Economic Caste Census (SECC) – 2011 dataincludinglandless households are provided assistance under PMAY-G.To achieve the objective of “Housing for All” by 2022, there is a target forconstruction of 2.95 crore houses, under PMAY-G. Construction of 1,57,033 houses has been completedunder PMAY (U), in Tamil Nadu in 2018-19. Further, construction of 1,71,966 houses has been completed in Tamil Nadu, under PMAY-G.

According to the information provided by the Government of Tamil Nadu, no houses have been constructed in Pollachi Constituency, during last 3 years. However, a proposal received by them for construction of 25 houses in Kaliankathu village in this constituency is under consideration of the Government of Tamil Nadu.
(d) & (e) :There is no proposal to create a separate fund for tribal housing.
