Question : DECLINE IN WHEAT PRICE

(a) whether the prices of wheat are likely to decline during the current financial year;

(b) if so, the details thereof; and

(c) the factors responsible for the said decline in the price of wheat in the international market?

Answer given by the minister

MINISTER OF STATE (INDEPENDENT CHARGE) FOR CONSUMER AFFAIRS, FOOD & PUBLIC DISTRIBUTION(PROF. K.V. THOMAS)

(a)&(b): No such assessment on future wheat prices has been made. However, in view of bumper production and procurement of wheat during Rabi Marketing Season 2011-12, it is expected that wheat prices will remain steady in near future.

(c): No such independent assessment regarding decline in wheat prices in international market has been made. However, better than expected harvest during 2011-12 as reported by International Grains Council and availability of surplus stocks with major wheat exporting countries are estimated to be the causes for fall in the wheat prices in international market.
