Question : OPENING OF COLLEGES



(a) whether it is a fact that students are compelled to migrate to other States for study due to shortage of Government engineering colleges in the country;

(b) if so, the details thereof;

(c) the number of institutes imparting professional and technical education in the country including Tamil Nadu;

(d) the number of population per engineering college in the country at present, State-wise;

(e) whether the Government proposes to open Government engineering and professional colleges in all the States/UTs including Dadra and Nagar Haveli and if so, the details thereof; and

(f) the time by which these colleges are likely to be opened?

(a) & (b): No, Madam. There are 6378 All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) approved engineering colleges in the country, which caters to the need of engineering education required in every state. During the XIth Five Year Plan period, Eight New Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) and ten new National Institute of Technology (NIT) have been opened in different States/UT to ensure the shortages of Govt. Engineering Colleges. This Ministry has also approved proposals for setting up of 16 Indian Institute of Information Technology (IIIT) in different parts of the country.

(c): The statewise number of Institutions imparting professional and technical education in the country including Tamil Nadu is given in Annexure-I.

(d): The details are given in Annexure-II.

(e)&(f): The Government, through All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), grants approval for setting up of new technical institutions by the Society/Trust/Companies registered under Section 25 of the Companies Act, 1956/ Central Government/State Government etc. under the provision of Clause 10(k) of the AICTE Act, 1987. However, the Government has decided to set up five new Indian Institute of Technology (IITs) one each at Jammu, Chhattisgarh, Andhra Pradesh, Goa and Kerala and one National Institute of Technology (NIT) at Andhra Pradesh. The first Session of the Institutes will commence from the academic year 2015-16. The new NIT, Goa is catering the need of Dadra & Nagar Haveli as quota of 50% seats is exclusively earmarked for students of Goa and Dadra & Nagar Haveli.
