Question : DEVELOPMENT OF MONUMENTS



(a) the names of the monuments protected by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) as on date, State-wise;

(b) the amount of money spent by the Government for the protection / maintenance of these monuments during the last three years;

(c) the efforts made by the Government to develop these monuments as the places of tourist`s interest;

(d) whether some national monuments are on the verge of collapse;

(e) if so, the details thereof, State-wise; and

(f) the steps being taken by Government to protect these monuments ?

(a) There are 3602 monuments and sites protected by the Archaeological Survey of India. The State-wise details of monuments is available in the Parliament Library.

(b) Expenditure incurred on maintenance of the centrally protected monuments during the last three years are as under:-

1996-97 Rs. 1740.17 Lakh
1997-98 Rs. 2339.30 Lakh
1998-99 Rs. 2437.34 Lakh

(c) Provision of tourist-related facilities in centrally protected monuments is an on-going process. In addition, flood-lighting and sound & light programmes are mounted by the State Tourism Departments at select monuments, apart from staging annual cultural programmes at various protected sites.
