Question : EXAMINATION SYSTEM IN SCHOOLS

(a) whether the Government propose to streamline the examination system in schools in consultation with the States and Union Territories and universities at all levels throughout the country, as the fixed time table for conducting examinations and declaring results enable the students to seek admission for higher studies in any part of the country;

(b) if so, the details thereof and the steps being taken in this regard; and

(c) if not, the reasons therefor?

Answer given by the minister

THE MINISTER OF STATE IN THE MINISTRY OF HUMAN RESOURCE DEVELOPMENT (PROF. RITA VERMA)

(a) to (c): Education is on the concurrent list and School Education is primarily the concern of the State/UT Governments. The timetable for conduct of Board level Examinations and declaration of results thereof is decided by the respective Boards of School Education set up in different states, keeping in view the local conditions, number of examinees and the needs of the students in regard to admission to the institutions of higher learning and professional colleges. In view of the diversity prevailing in different Regions of the country it is not advisable to have a common fixed Examination Schedule. It would also curtail the autonomy of Boards of School Education of the States.
